Big Blood brother is an American goggle box reality contest show based on the original Dutch reality show of the same name created by producer John de Mol in 1997.[iv] The serial takes its proper name from the character in George Orwell's 1949 novel 19 Eighty-Four. The American series launched on July v, 2000 on CBS and is currently the second longest-running adaptation in the Large Blood brother franchise to date, subsequently the Spanish version.

The show broadly follows the premise of other versions of the format, in which a group of contestants, known as "HouseGuests", live together in a specially constructed house that is isolated from the outside world for a cash prize of $500,000 (or $750,000 in the 23rd season). The HouseGuests are continuously monitored during their stay in the house by alive television cameras as well as personal audio microphones. Throughout the course of the competition, HouseGuests are evicted from the house, by being voted out of the competition. In its inaugural season (which followed the original Dutch format), ratings declined and critical reaction grew increasingly negative, prompting the serial to be revamped for the 2nd flavour, which focused on competition and gameplay.[v]

On July 23, 2020, subsequently production delays due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was announced that the 22nd season would be an "All-Stars" edition (consisting of only previous houseguests), premiering on Baronial v, 2020. The "All-Stars" format was originally used in flavor seven.[6] On October 28, 2020, the serial was renewed for the 23rd flavour.[vii]

The show also produced two spin-offs: Big Brother: Over the Tiptop, which aired for ane season and was the first reality game testify to air exclusively on a streaming platform ambulation in Fall 2016 on CBS' streaming service, CBS All Access; and Glory Big Brother, which aired on CBS in February 2018.[8] [nine] [10]

In an endeavour to promote diversity, CBS announced a new dominion for Big Brother that 50% of all contestants must exist a person of color or an indigenous person for the 2021–2022 broadcast flavor.[11]

History [edit]

Serial [edit]

The series airs once a year, during the summer, except for the ninth season, which aired in the jump of 2008, and the Over the Top spinoff serial broadcasting in fall 2016. Currently, 23 seasons of the show have aired, along with one digital season.[15] Season 22 premiered on August 5, 2020.[6] The show has aired a total of 820 episodes since information technology premiered, with the September five, 2013 airing mark the 500th episode.[xvi] To date, at that place accept been a full of 288 HouseGuests compete in the series. Upon entering the business firm, the HouseGuests must abide past the business firm rules; HouseGuests can anytime leave the house without permission or be forcibly removed from the game if they broke whatsoever rules, such every bit exhibiting violent and disruptive behavior. In both cases, these HouseGuests are not allowed to return to the house and are usually incorporated with a penalty such as not allowed to exist involved in a jury.

Companion shows [edit]

Since its premiere, there have been numerous companion programs about the show. In 2004, the spider web series Firm Calls: The Big Brother Talk Show (2004–2008) began ambulation.[17] The series, which lasted for thirty minutes and aired on weeknights, allowed fans to phone call in and discuss the events of the game.[18] This made House Calls the showtime alive Cyberspace talk testify produced exclusively for a telly network.[19] The series was initially hosted by Gretchen Massey and Large Brother 3 HouseGuest Marcellas Reynolds during its first two seasons.[20] Get-go with the show's third season, a new co-host was featured on the series each solar day, with some returning more than once.[21] During the show's fifth and sixth seasons, each co-host was given a designated 24-hour interval of the week to host alongside Gretchen.[22] Following the bear witness'due south 6th flavour, it was confirmed that it would not exist renewed.[23] Large Brother: After Dark, a second companion series, was debuted in 2007 and aired on Get-go Too nightly from 12:00 midnight-3:00am Eastern Time.[24] The series continued this schedule until 2013, at which betoken it was moved to TVGN (now Popular), where it remains today.[25] [26] Erstwhile HouseGuest Jeff Schroeder began hosting the Big Brother: Live Chat online give-and-take prove in 2012, where he interviewed the HouseGuests both before they enter the house and following their evictions. He also performed postal service-finale backyard interviews with the cast.[27] On August x, 2017, Schroeder appear that he was moving to Colorado and would no longer be able to practice the interviews.[28] For Large Brother 20, the "Live Conversation" was replaced by Off the Block with Ross and Marissa. Hosted past former Glory HouseGuests Marissa Jaret Winokur and Ross Mathews, the prove is set up to air on Fridays on Facebook following the live eviction.[29]

Spin-offs [edit]

There accept been two spin-off editions of Big Brother. In Oct 2016, CBS premiered a spin-off web series, Big Blood brother: Over the Top, every bit an original series for CBS All Access. Unlike the flagship, television version, it was circulate exclusively online with a shorter, 10-calendar week season.[30] [31] The second spin-off, Glory Big Brother, aired its first flavour on CBS on February 7, 2018.[10] Celebrity Large Brother was renewed for a second flavour, which premiered on January 21, 2019 and concluded on February 13. All the same, on January 1, 2020, CBS announced there would not be a Celebrity Big Brother in 2020.[32] In September of 2021, CBS announced that the glory edition of the show would be returning on February 2, 2022.

Though non an actual spin-off, the Canadian edition of the serial is, to date, the but series to adopt the full American format of Large Brother. [33] Withal, other franchises have used elements of the American format, including the 2020 revival of the Large Brother Commonwealth of australia, which uses an altered version of the American format with the Australian public nevertheless deciding the eventual winner. Other franchises such every bit Big Brother Brasil presently adopted private elements from the American format (Veto Competition, Have/Have-Nots, and Head of Household) into their format while yet maintaining the international public vote format for weekly evictions and final vote.

Format [edit]

Big Brother is a game show in which a group of contestants, referred to every bit HouseGuests, alive in a custom-congenital "firm" (actually a set built on a CBS stage in Los Angeles, Stage 18 since season half-dozen), constantly under video surveillance.[34] While in the business firm, the contestants are completely isolated from the outside earth, pregnant that they are not allowed any contact with those non in the business firm.[35] This rule could exist broken, notwithstanding, in the event of a medical injury, a family emergency or expiry.[36] The format of the series is mainly seen as a social experiment, and requires HouseGuests to interact with others who may have differing ideals, behavior, and prejudices.[37] [38] While a competition, the serial allows viewers to witness the relationships formed in the house and the behavior of the HouseGuests.[39] Though locked in the house, the HouseGuests are free to quit the game, though they will not be allowed entry back into the house.[twoscore] Should a HouseGuest break the rules of the game, they could be expelled from the house and unable to render.[41] [42] The contestants compete for a yard prize of $500,000 (or $750,000 in the 23rd flavour).[43] [44]

Flavour one format [edit]

The premiere flavor, the format of the show resembled the original Dutch version of the testify—a format adjusted past most versions. Every bit the format of the show emphasized the social experiment aspects of the premise, the competitive aspects were minimized: HouseGuests did not compete for ability or safety, and the nominations procedure was non discussed by the HouseGuests.[45]

Every 2 weeks, each HouseGuest participated in a mandatory voting called Nomination which determine a list of HouseGuests nominated for eviction, too known as "Marked for adjournment". Each HouseGuest secretly nominated ii other beau housemates, providing full reasons for their nominations.[46] In the effect of a tie, the two or more than HouseGuests with the most nominations became marked for banishment and faced the public vote for the post-obit week.[47] Towards the end of the flavor, the nominations process reverted to a weekly process.

After the nominations were finalized, a public voting window opens for America who vote for which HouseGuest would exist banished through televoting.[48] This process continued until 3 HouseGuests remained, where the final vote was changed to determine the winner of the evidence. The winner won the $500,000 prize, the runner-up left with $100,000 and 3rd identify left with $50,000.[47] The contest even so, received negative reception from both critics and viewers.[49]

Season 2–present [edit]

Big Brother 14 winner and Big Brother 22 contestant Ian Terry, with the Diamond Ability of Veto

Having spent millions on the serial, CBS issued a second season of the serial and announced that various changes would occur with the current format,[five] putting more emphasis on competition and strategy that bears resemblance to the format from another CBS show, Survivor.

At the start of each week in the house, the HouseGuests compete for three types of competitions, Head of Household, Take-Not, and the Ability of Veto. For the Caput of Household,[fifty] HouseGuests compete for immunity from eviction and the power to nominate two HouseGuests for the eviction, and frequently receive privileges such every bit their ain personal chamber and free laundry service; however, the incumbent Head of Household is not able to compete in the following week's Head of Household competition, meaning that a HouseGuest cannot hold the title for a second sequent calendar week, except for the final week or other stated circumstances.[51] [52] [53] Introduced in flavor three is the Ability of Veto, where whatsoever HouseGuests compete for the right to replace any nominated HouseGuest from the eviction, which continues until iii HouseGuests remain. Introduced in season 7 are Have-Not competitions, where losing HouseGuests are penalized with a "Have-Not" diet past eating slop and slumber in a special bedroom for the remainder of the week.[54]

At the end of the week, all HouseGuests except for iii (the Head of Household and the two nominees) bandage a vote, i-by-one, privately inside the "Diary Room" (also called Confession room in other shows), to determine which of the two nominees should be evicted; the HouseGuest receiving a bulk of the eligible HouseGuest's votes is evicted during a live episode; if there is a tie in the voting, the reigning Head of Household and then casts the deciding vote to resolve a tie.[55] Unlike other versions of Large Brother, the HouseGuests may discuss the nomination and eviction procedure openly and freely. One time the HouseGuest is evicted, Chen informs the evictee to pack their belongings in a minute and bid bye messages to any remaining HouseGuests earlier leaving the house.

Some eviction ceremonies have at least i calendar week with a different variant which was first seen since flavor v. A notable variant, dubbed the "Double Eviction Week" or "Fast Forward Week", had weeklong events (HoH and Veto Competitions, likewise as Nominations, Veto and Eviction cermoneies) occur in an accelerated format, then that two HouseGuests are evicted over a week. The "Double Eviction Week" has become a staple of the show, particularly in the penultimate calendar week featuring the Concluding 5 and Final 4 evictions. Some other variation of the Double Eviction was introduced in season seven with the "Double Eviction Night" where the events of the week occur over the course of the Live Eviction episode, with the event too becoming a staple of the show. The 22nd season, introduced the "Triple Eviction Night", where two weeks worth of game events are played inside an extended Live Eviction episode then that 3 HouseGuests are evicted. The "Triple Eviction Night" was previously used on Large Brother Canada with a different format - where a unmarried live round was played, with three Nominees and Two HouseGuests being evicted inside a single round. Another variant is "Eviction Contest" (such as season 14 and season eighteen) and HouseGuests competed in a serial of competitions for survival in the firm, and the HouseGuest who finished terminal may face up automatic eviction; if the competition is played equally a squad, all the members from the losing team are eligible for eviction as if they are nominated. An Eviction Competition was also proposed equally a twist in the premiere of season 19, but was not held as the majority opted for an eviction vote instead of a competition.

Nigh halfway through the game, the evicted HouseGuests become members of the Large Brother Jury, which play a office to vote for the winner of the series between the last two HouseGuests. The members of the Jury are not shown whatsoever Diary Room interviews or whatsoever footage that may include strategy or details regarding nominations. In seasons two and three, all HouseGuests who were evicted except those who either walked or removed from the game are not eligible, only due to a possibility of a necktie and an American public vote is decisive, the jury is only eligible for only the vii recently evicted HouseGuests offset season four (known as Jury of Seven), before increasing to nine members (Jury of Nine) starting season 15.[56] Once just two HouseGuests remain, the members of the Jury would cast the votes to decide the winner by placing their keys with the name to the slots (versus stating their choice to eliminate, as in all other votes).[57] Members who either walked or removed but was function of the Jury remained as a fellow member but is not immune to vote, instead the vote is decided past the public, as information technology was first seen in season 11 where Chima Simone was removed from the game while she was still function of the jury and host Chen Moonves represented her vote in her behalf.[58]

Jessie Godderz holds the record for most appearances on Big Brother with two appearances equally a HouseGuest and nine appearances as a special guest.

To go on the series intriguing, each season typically features a new twist to change the format of the game. This began with season 3 and the famous "Wait the Unexpected" twist.[59] Other seasons characteristic smaller twists that have a smaller impact on the game, usually affecting that sole week. The near notable instance of this is Pandora's Box, a twist that originated in flavor 11.[sixty] The twist sees the current Caput of Household for that week being tempted by the box, and can choose to either open the box or leave it. Should a HouseGuest choose to open Pandora's Box, both good and bad consequences could be unleashed into the firm, which impacts every HouseGuests in-game including the person who opens it.[61] [62] Similar formats are practical in later seasons, for example, the Den of Temptation introduced in flavor nineteen.[63] Other variants such every bit the Coup d'état, allowed the holder to remove i or both nominees from the block on eviction nighttime, also as cull who is nominated in their place.[64] [65] A different variant, dubbed Diamond Power of Veto, was seen during Big Brother 12 (2010), which allowed the user to remove ane HouseGuest from the block and choose the replacement nominee.[66] Season 14 also had a Diamond Power of Veto which carried the aforementioned functionality as a standard PoV.[67] In some seasons, such as season 8, season ten and season 16, the public voted for a set of HouseGuests who would piece of work with the public. On each pre-adamant periods throughout the entire season, the public voted for 1 of ordinarily two possible actions the HouseGuests would desire to perform, and HouseGuests would earn prize money if they were able to complete the action.

Many seasons have featured twists in which evicted HouseGuests (except for HouseGuests who either walked or was removed) can win reentry into the house, either past public vote or competition. Normally, this involves sequestering each eliminated contestant individually or in the jury house (depending on whether the twist occurred pre-jury or post-jury, respectively).

America's Favorite HouseGuest [edit]

Introduced in season 7, viewers of Big Blood brother cast a vote to make up one's mind the fan favorite HouseGuest for a cash honor of $25,000 on every season except Over-The-Superlative. The results are appear following the finale of the respective flavour.

During the season'south debut, the award is only eligible to the Jury of 7 (hence the award was called America'due south Favorite Juror or America's Choice Jury Prize), before expanding the eligibility to all HouseGuests including the winner (excluding any HouseGuests who either withdrew or was forcibly removed from the House) beginning season xi. The voting percentages were also revealed alive merely it has been dropped since season 17.[68]

Since its launch in the United States, Big Blood brother has aired on CBS.[69] The show is simulcast in Canada on Global.[70] The fourth and ninth seasons take both aired in the United Kingdom, the latter airing in the Spring season.[71] The outset flavour featured a full of half-dozen episodes per week, though all future installments would air three nights per week.[72] Of these three episodes, the weekly eviction episode is the simply one that is alive; this is the only episode to feature host Julie Chen. This bear witness mostly airs on Thursdays.[73] To engagement, in that location take been a total of 783 episodes of the series to air.[74] With the exception of the ninth season, the serial typically airs once a year during the summer flavour.[75] [76] The commencement xv seasons aired in standard definition, with the 16th season being the first to be produced in Hard disk drive. Even so, the alive net feeds would not broadcast in HD until Large Brother 17.[77] [78] Before the series fabricated the transfer, it was the last remaining regularly scheduled prime-time series to remain in standard definition.[79] [80] CBS released the entire third flavor as a ix-disc assail Region 1 DVD.[81] This fabricated it the showtime season to receive an official release, and has since go a rare item to find.[82] The quaternary flavour saw the release of a 2-disc highlights DVD, featuring previously unseen footage deemed too racy for the main broadcast.[83] To date, these are the only seasons to run across a physical release. Beginning with the seventh season, all future seasons are bachelor for purchase on digital retail sites.[84] With the 15th season, TVGN (now Pop) began ambulation re-runs of the series at later dates, making information technology the first flavor to be aired post-obit its premiere; this continued with the 16th season.[85] Subscribers to CBS All Access are able to stream the complete run of Large Brother—including the differently-formatted first season—and an episode of Big Brother two that did not air in nigh markets due to ongoing coverage of the September eleven attacks. CBS aired the spin-off series Celebrity Big Brother from February seven–25, 2018. It was the first spin-off to air on the broadcast network and the second season overall to air in the winter television set flavor (the other being season nine). The glory edition aired in a full-bodied run with fewer episodes, merely with multiple episodes each week.[viii]

Alive Cyberspace feeds [edit]

One of the main aspects of the serial is the live feeds, in which viewers can view inside the house at any fourth dimension.[86] The live feeds have been a function of the series since its inception, initially existence offered as a costless service during the first flavour.[87] From the second season onward, a subscription to the live feeds has been required, with the cost ranging each year.[88] The kickoff season's feeds were available on the show'due south official site, hosted by AOL.[89] From the second season to the 14th season, the feeds were available through RealNetworks either as a subscription or every bit a free addition for Gold members.[ninety]

Since 2016, the live feeds have aired on CBS All Admission (known every bit Paramount+ since March 2021), again requiring a subscription from users.[91] Though advertised as beingness available at any time, the feeds are shut off during the weekly nomination anniversary, Power of Veto ceremony, and the competitions and evictions for that week; this is to provide suspense for the series.[92] Slanderous statements and singing of copyrighted music are also blocked for legal reasons.[93] [94] [95]

Competitions [edit]

Head of Household (HOH) [edit]

The Head of Household competition is held at the beginning of each week and is nearly often occurred during the alive eviction episode.[96] Most often, the first Head of Household competition will require HouseGuests to participate either in pairs or in teams.[97] While the quaternary, fifth and eighth seasons had the HouseGuests competing in pairs,[98] seasons 6, seven, 11, 12, 14, 15 and xvi all saw HouseGuests participated as group.[99] [100] The live Caput of Household competitions are typically quiz-based, and will see HouseGuests eliminated in each circular.[101] Competitions such as "Bulk Rules" accept been used numerous times, with the game being played in the fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth, tenth and twelfth seasons;[102] [103] a variation of the competition was used in the 7th season.[104] Some competitions will attempt to cause drama in the business firm, such as the "En Garde" Head of Household contest, in which the winner of each round selected the next two to face up off confronting 1 another.[105] This competition was afterward used in the 10th through 16th seasons.[106] [107] Various competitions throughout the season will be endurance, requiring HouseGuests to exist the terminal one remaining in the competition.[108] Endurance competitions are often held after game changing announcements, such as when a previously evicted HouseGuest returns.[109] Various endurance competitions may take punished or rewarded contestants who either fall off first or concluding.[110] Skill-based competitions besides announced frequently throughout the season, some of which may last for numerous hours.[111] Skill competitions, such as the 13th season'south "Large Brother Open", are finished during the live eviction broadcast.[112] The final Head of Household competition of each season features 3 rounds; the get-go is endurance-based, the second is skill-based (often with a retentiveness component), and the terminal is quiz-based (usually narrated by the Jury members).[113] [114] One of the Head of Household's duties is to nominate two HouseGuests for eviction; in the case of Final 3, the Head will instead vote to evict ane of the remaining two HouseGuests since these HouseGuests are nominated past default.

Power of Veto (PoV) [edit]

The Power of Veto symbol, used since the testify's third season

The Power of Veto is a ability starting time introduced in Big Blood brother 3.[115] During its kickoff season, it did not let a nominated HouseGuest to use information technology on themselves.[116] The last Power of Veto that season was the Gold Power of Veto and immune a nominated HouseGuest to remove themselves from the block.[117] Following this, the Aureate Ability of Veto was used in all subsequent seasons.[118] [119] The Diamond Power of Veto, used in Big Blood brother 12, immune one HouseGuest to remove themselves from the block.[120] besides as choose the replacement nominee just moments before the live eviction.[121] Power of Veto competitions differ drastically from the Caput of Household competition, with PoV competitions being more skill-based in nature.[122] Competitions such as the "Popular Goes the Veto!" competition, which required HouseGuests to find alphabetic character tiles and spell the longest word, have been used in numerous consecutive seasons.[123] [124] Competitions such as the "Big Brother Boardwalk" competition encounter HouseGuests attempting to gauge how much of an item there is; this is one of various competitions that practice not crave HouseGuests to compete in a physical-based competition.[125] [126] The "How Bad Do You lot Want Information technology?" Power of Veto contest, kickoff introduced in the seventh season, saw HouseGuests taking punishments in exchange for advancing in the competition.[127] Variations of this competition take been used in numerous subsequent seasons.[128] [129]

Food and luxury [edit]

Food and luxury competitions accept been a part of the serial since information technology first premiered. In early seasons, the losers of the food contest would be placed on a peanut butter and jelly diet and would non exist permitted to consume any other foods.[130]

Beginning with Season 7, the losers of the Have-Not contest were required to consume "Big Blood brother Slop" for food, and sleep in a special "Take-Non" room with cold showers and most discomforts such equally hard pillows and beds for a calendar week.[131] [132] [133] [134] Slop has proven to be an issue for some HouseGuests; in both cases on Season nine, hypoglycemic HouseGuest Amanda Hansen fainted and had a seizure after only a few days of being on the slop diet,[131] while HouseGuest Allison Nichols had an allergic reaction to the slop;[135] [136] both women were medically evacuated from the house, though they returned the following morning time.[137] In some seasons, a HouseGuest can also win a Never-Not Pass which they would be immune from beingness a Accept-Not for the season's remainder.

Since second All-stars flavor, subsequent weeks forego "Have-Not" competitions and instead, either the Head-of-Household or the previous recipients of "Have-Nots" decide the next "Accept-Nots" for the week, with the exception of a few weeks which reset the process, such as weeks without a "Accept-Not" phase or a competition is held. The choice of decide the "Have-Not" tin be of whatsoever HouseGuests except for the reigning Head of Household or the incumbents, or one team in the case of teams (first seen in Flavor 23).

HouseGuests tin can be penalized for not following Accept-Non rules, which is usually incorporated with a penalisation vote for eviction,[138] [139] or in some cases, an additional twenty-four hours of a Have-Non.[140] A controversy occurred during Flavor 21 where eventual winner Jackson Michie also broke the rule, but was non issued a punishment due to the obstruction of the photographic camera view behind the shower walls while eating not-slop,[141] [142] [143] resulting in the Have-Not being unseen for the remainder of that flavor.[144]

The HouseGuests also frequently compete in luxury competitions during their time in the house, with most frequently, the right to watch a film or television show in the house, or a minor cash prize.[145] When competitions for films or television shows occur, an actor or actress from the series may enter the house to host the competition or speak with the HouseGuests. Actors such every bit Jeremy Piven,[146] David Hasselhoff,[147] and Neil Patrick Harris have all entered the firm to participate in luxury competitions or rewards.[148]

Boxing of the Block [edit]

The Battle of the Block was first introduced during season xvi and was reintroduced during the following season'south premiere. Instead of the normal singular Head of Household (HOH), 2 HOHs were named for that week. Each would then nominate a pair of nominees. These two pairs of nominees would compete confronting each other in a competition. The winning pair would receive immunity and if nominated, the and incumbent HOH that nominated them would be dethroned and losing amnesty, allowing the other HOH sole power for the residual of the week. In that location were 8 Battle of the Block competitions in season 16 and five in season 17. Boxing of the Block did non render after season 18.

Boxing Dorsum [edit]

The Battle Back Competition allows an evicted HouseGuest to return into the house and play equally if they had never have actually evicted. While elements of this competition first appeared in Flavour xv, it was officially introduced in Season 18 and has appeared in subsequent seasons except Season 22 and 23. The losers in each Battle Back faces permanent eviction, and the winner in the final Battle Back competition won re-entry. A variant of a Battle Back also appear in Season twenty where the contempo evicted HouseGuest competed in a single challenge (due to a twist) to determine whether the HouseGuest was allowed re-entry if successful.

Another variant also happened on Season xviii; dubbed as "Round Trip Ticket", the ticket would let the HouseGuest who picked it to re-enter the house immediately following eviction (for a certain time); HouseGuests are told not to open the ticket until their eviction, and doing then before the eviction will void the effect.
